The Benefits of Faith-Based Retirement Communities

The correlation between spirituality and aging is an important one. Today, 65% of American adults identify as Christians, but more than 90% of seniors consider themselves religious or spiritual individuals. Spiritual support and community can be incredibly important to many older Americans, regardless of when faith became a meaningful factor in their lives.

Whether they have pursued faith throughout their lives or found religion more recently, a lifetime of experiences have pointed them to their need for the love, purpose, truth, forgiveness, and grace found through faith. As a result, choosing a religiously affiliated retirement community can have significant positive impacts on seniors’ quality of life.

For example, in addition to other amenities and services, Christian retirement communities typically offer multiple forms of spiritual support. These can include on-campus chapels, Bible study groups, prayer groups, worship services, and chaplain support. Here are some of the ways that faith based senior living communities can help retirees lead more fulfilling lives:

  • Support a life of faith. First and foremost, religious retirement communities help residents maintain a rich and meaningful spiritual life, complete with all its struggles and triumphs. There are many ways to deepen your faith in these communities: besides reflection, prayer, and worship, you’ll have opportunities to share your spiritual life with others and live a life of service by volunteering with local organizations. There’s no limit to what you can accomplish, and how you may grow, when you share your faith with an entire community.

  • Prevent isolation. Christian Bible study, prayer, and support groups can all go a long way to provide seniors with a supportive social network, as can simply attending religious services or stopping to chat with a neighbor. In addition to enriching your spiritual life, avoiding isolation in retirement is essential. Loneliness is linked with high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, poor immune health, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, and more. By avoiding isolation yourself, you’re helping others to avoid it as well!

  • Promote good mental and physical health. Being involved with faith based senior living communities helps seniors stay busy and meet new people as well as learn from and teach others. You can even get some good exercise while volunteering, walking, or gardening with your friends in faith. All of this can boost self-esteem, physical and mental resilience, and general happiness.

  • Offer a sense of community and belonging. The strength and types of social networks we have change considerably over the course of our lives. The passing of time (and sometimes, the loss of friends and loved ones) can make seniors feel less grounded where they live. A retirement community that aligns with your religious values can provide a natural sense of community and belonging every time you walk out your front door.

  • Gain peace with common values. Values often stem from spiritual beliefs. When people don’t share the same values as others around them, inner turmoil or conflict with others may arise. When you choose a senior living community that closely aligns with your faith values, you gain a sense of peace knowing that the organization will lead and make decisions within a framework that you understand and trust.

  • Keep cherished holiday traditions. When you choose a Christian care retirement community whose traditions and practices match your own, you can enjoy Christian holidays in much the same familiar fashion as you did at previous ages in life. This can provide a wonderful sense of continuity in your golden years and evoke many happy memories of holidays past.

  • Provide a sense of purpose. As we age, it’s normal to have increasing questions about the trajectory of the life we’ve lived so far and where our future should or might be headed. Christians often have a deep desire to pursue God’s teachings and commands throughout life. The chance to pursue your purpose, share your faith, and show God’s love with other members of your Christian senior living community can help you gain perspective and enrich your purpose.
